Demolition Safety Tips

The hazards of demolition work can be controlled and eliminated with the proper planning, the right personal protective equipment, necessary training, and compliance with OSHA standards. To avoid injuries and an unsafe work environment, it’s important to follow strict procedures and protocols.

Temporary Fencing

Temporary fencing is an alternative to its permanent counterpart when a fence is required. It is a must have when doing an exterior demolition! We use temporary fencing to secure the job site, making sure no one enters and avoid debris from leaving the site. The first rule of demolition is safety first!

Personal Protective Equipment

There are 4 types of personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Respiratory protection – face masks, etc.
  • Eye protection – goggles, shields, visors.
  • Hearing protection – ear muffs and plugs.
  • Hand protection – gloves

The other main important piece of safety equipment aside from Safety Glasses, Ear Plugs, Safety Masks and Gloves is hard hats. Hard hats must be worn on job sites at all times! The head must always stay protected from falling debris or unexpected mishaps.

Work Boots

Work boots must be worn to enter a demolition job site. These boots have a steel toe which protects the feet in case anything falls. The bottom of these shoes are usually composed of strong material that can withstand nails and other sharp objects that can be stepped on at any time. Work boots and long pants to protect the legs are extremely important to stay safe and abide by OSHA standards.

Construction Work Shirts

As you notice from all of our pictures, our company work shirts have long sleeves and built in sun protection. The long sleeves protect our demolition workers arms from debris and sun exposure. Never underestimate the damage the sun can do when working outside all day! Florida sun is very dangerous, so sunscreen and work shirts are required!

Safety Summary

Demolition work can be very dangerous if not done correctly. Without taking the necessary measures to ensure a safe staff, you can end up with many problems. The most important part to completing a demolition job is making sure everyone is safe! The Demo Boyzz always take all necessary safety precautions and ensure your job is completed on budget, on time and safely.

Filling in an Inground Swimming Pool

If permitted, we will fill in your inground swimming pool with dirt. This is the fastest and least expensive way to get rid of your pool. Since we don’t have to remove the concrete or metal shell of the pool, we are able to provide a better price. Hauling away concrete is a process that should be avoided if possible. It is heavy material to haul off, so it can be timely and fairly expensive. Leaving the shell of your pool is a much faster way to get rid of it.

Compacting Dirt for the Pool

It is important to compact the dirt every step of the way as you fill in your inground swimming pool. That way you can mitigate potential settling. We would never want to affect the land and cause a sink hole. Before adding any dirt, we drain holes in the bottom of the pool to allow for any water to escape. This will avoid any possible water buildup issues that could occur. We use our John Deere compact track loader to make the process go much faster and more efficiently. Every layer of dirt that is added is packed down firmly throughout the entire pool. Look at the pictures below demonstrating the process and tools used along the way.

Concrete Patio Removal

The demolition of concrete patios often goes hand in hand with removing your swimming pool. The two are often associated with each other as removal is usually done when the pool has become old and unkept. The most common way we demolish a patio is using our John Deere Demo Hammer Attachment. This attachment easily breaks up the concrete into haulable pieces allowing us to remove the patio fast and efficiently. The more work our machines can do, the faster we can accomplish the job. This allows us to provide the best service and prices in our area.

Excavating the land

After the dirt is filled in, we will excavate the land using our machine. The tracks of the skidsteer grade the land to make it even and compact. It’s important to hire demolition professionals who have experience in this field. That way, your job will be completed on budget, on time and the right way.

Operating a Skidsteer or Compact Track Loader

A Skidsteer, or compact track loader, is an amazing and versatile piece of machinery that I highly recommend adding to one’s inventory. A Skidsteer can be purchased with tracks or with wheels. We use a John Deere 331G with tracks and I love everything about this machine! It’s a strong piece of equipment with an operating weight of 12,000 pounds. It’s one of the strongest skidsteers on the market and in my opinion worth every penny! I am a huge fan of the John Deere brand in general for many reasons, which I will get into in another post.

Changing Attachments on a Skidsteer

John Deere attachments can easily be switched out, usually in less than a minute. There are so many attachments to choose from for a compact track loader ranging from buckets to backhoes to hammers to rollers and more! It’s important to change your attachments based on the task it’s being used for. We use our John Deere 331G Skidsteer everyday for our total demolition projects, and most frequently use the bucket attachment, grapple and hydraulic hammer. For these types of demolition, we often change out attachments from a regular bucket to a grapple bucket to a demo hammer. It’s important to have all attachments on hand since each attachment is used in its own unique way. The regular bucket is used for scooping up concrete and other debris that needs to be scooped up from underneath. The grapple bucket is most often used when grabbing loads of mixed debris or other material that needs to be grabbed tightly. The hydraulic demo hammer attachment is my all time favorite! John Deere’s hammers are the fastest hydraulic hammers on the market! This powerful attachment is great at breaking up concrete. Some great examples of when we use the demo hammer attachment is when we do inground pool demolitions or driveway demolitions. This attachment is a must have when owning a demolition company!

Construction Debris Removal Process

It’s important to have the right attachment for loading up debris after a demolition. Whether it’s a full house teardown, inground pool removal or any concrete removal project, it’s crucial to have all necessary attachments to complete the task properly. Hauling away material is one of the most time consuming aspects to the demolition process! Mountains of material need to be separated and placed into our dump trucks or dumpster fast and efficiently. Once material is separated, we can dispose of and recycle at the appropriate center. With proper preparation, speed, expertise and machinery you can complete a demolition timely and effectively!
